w6art.co.uk is a UK sole-trader company, set up in 2009.
Our base is in Hammersmith, west London ... that's where the name comes from : W6 is the district post code.
w6art incorporates the older eyeBender.co.uk, which was our original site - all the eyeBender stuff is here, along with lots of other works.

Artworks

Starting out with panoramic photos, the range here has grown to include both traditional rectangular panoramas and circular 'birds-eye-view' scenes. All the places are real, of course. Sizes and framing

Prints are supplied unframed, unless otherwise shown.
Framing is available on selected prints - for delivery in London only.

Dimensions given for each item are those of the image itself.

Silk-screen prints always have ‘white space‘ around them, and are suitable for framing as-is, or after careful trimming. Framing using bevelled mounts, or a simple floating arrangement are both suitable.

Photos are usually printed to the edge of the paper, or close to it. Bevelled mounts and/or contact mounting are suitable framing strategies; given the subject matter, important detail is concentrated in the centre of the images. For best results, mounts should overlap the image by 5-10 mm on each side.

Framing options

Some of our prints come with a framing option, for delivery to London addresses.

Currently available for the circular panorama range only, £50.
Please choose the "framed"option shown with each item.

Framed prints are delivered by hand - in London only. We can deliver framed prints anywhere that has a Tube or London Overground station within a mile or so. Deliveries are free.

Customers outside London can of course order any of our prints unframed.

Papers and materials

Limited editions

Nothing here is mass-produced. All our photograhps and silk-screen prints are limited edition, signed and numbered by the artist.

Photographic

Professional photo papers
Real photographs: all our panoramas are proper digital C-type photographs on Fuji and Kodak papers - not inkjet prints.
The paper manufacturers guarantee that the colours won't fade "for generations" in normal indoor conditions.

Laser technology photo printing
The digital C-type process uses red, green & blue lasers to transfer the image to the photographic paper. Also known as chromogenic printing (or lambda, or lightjet), the process allows an exceptionally wide gamut of colours to be reproduced, and the precision tracking of the lasers allows excellent retention of detail. The result is some very vibrant, sharp prints.

Size matters
There is a lot of detail in our panoramas. Our (generous) standard size for the circular ones is 16 inches / 405 mm square - about as wide as a tabloid newspaper. They can be hung at a comfortable height, but they won't dominate a room.

Which way up?
You can hang our circular panoramas up-side down or sideways ....
Who can say which way is up?

Silk-screen prints

Hand made
Our silk-screen prints and are produced either as single-copy monoprints or in editions of a few copies.
Edition sizes are shown with each design.

Silk-screen method
The artist makes a stencil for the image on a screen - originally made of silk, but nowadays a fine polyester mesh. Stencils can be photographic, hand-drawn in wax, or made using a myriad of other methods and materials. Coloured ink is spread on the screen, then the artist pulls a squeegee over it, forcing ink through the screen mesh onto the paper below. The screen is lifted, revealing the print.
The process is repeated for each layer / colour in the image, printing directly on top of the earlier layers - gradually building up the final result.

Papers
All of our silk-screen prints are on art papers, suitable for framing.
The most common types :

Inks & colours
The acrylic inks used in the silk-screen process can produce colours that a computer screen just can't display, so what you see on-screen is an approximation of a print's real appearance. Metallic, day-glow and saturated colours are a particular challenge : even photographs don't do them justice.

^ heading #circular photo panoramas ^ picture #square #1033 #London - Palace of Westminster #80+ #405 mm / 16 in square #360-degree circular panorama

Houses of Parliament, Westminster

An evening view of the Houses of Parliament, as viewed from the south bank of the River Thames. The large 'London Eye' wheel appears on the right, and County Hall at lower right.

St. Steven's Tower, better known as Big Ben, takes centre stage at the top.

Limited edition : 25 ^ picture #square #1008 #Hammersmith Bridge #80+ #405 mm / 16 in square #360-degree circular panorama

This is the second bridge to be built across the River Thames at Hammersmith, the first having become too weak for heavy horse-drawn traffic. It still forms a vital link with Barnes on the south bank - the next bridges in either direction being at some considerable distance.

Each March, the Oxford v Cambridge Boat Race passes under the bridge ... but the River Thames in spring can be very choppy, which all adds to the fun ...

Opened by Edward VII, Prince of Wales in 1877, the current bridge is a challenge to maintain, with its wrought iron construction and solid oak deck timbers.

Opened by Queen Victoria in 1871, London's Royal Albert Hall is recognised the world over.

Part of the ‘Albertopolis‘ district of South Kensington, the hall is in exact geographical alignment with at least four other great buildings, including the Royal School of Music, seen here at bottom right, the Albert Memorial in Hyde Park, and the Natural History Museum.

Hosting events from The Proms to boxing and even ice skating, the hall has moved with the times, and retains its place at the cultural heart of England.

Back to its former glory and scrubbed clean, Wren‘s glorious cathedral has been in the headlines for a few months as the site of the ‘Occupy London‘ protest. It has seen off many a threat - notably a world war or two. And Diana walked up the steps ...

Paternoster Square - site of the London Stock Exchange - has attracted controversy over the years, with its modernist architecture - in great contrast with its towering neighbour. But the city types love it, and the cafés do a good trade.

^ picture #square #1025 #Westminster - Big Ben #80+ #405 mm / 16 in square #360-degree circular panorama

Houses of Parliament & Westminster Bridge

The Palace of Westminster has a 1000-year history, but much of it was destroyed by fire in 1834; the Gothic-style replacement was chosen to be "different from the White House in the USA".

St. Steven‘s Tower is perhaps the world‘s most recognisable building ... designed to provoke awe and inspire confidence in Parliament (we hope). Big Ben is just the bell.

Across Westminster Bridge is the London Eye - one of the world‘s largest Ferris wheels. Take the 30-minute trip 135m above the River Thames for a view right over central London.

A view of the regenerated Docklands financial district in the East End of London, with One Canada Square - the tallest skyscraper in the country - and all the modern architecture you can handle.

Many of London‘s financial institutions have moved here from the old City of London a couple of miles up the road. Smart retailers and restaurants have followed.

Canary Wharf Tube station, seen here at the edge of the square, is something of an architectural marvel in its own right, with its cavernous underground concourse and curvy bubble-shaped entrance.

Limited edition : 25 ^ picture #square #1024 #Richmond Bridge - evening #80+ #405 mm / 16 in square #360-degree circular panorama

Richmond-upon-Thames is the only London Borough that spans the River Thames, and Richmond Bridge - built 1777 - is the oldest of all London‘s bridges that remains close to its original design. The geography is a little curvy here, like the river - the north end of the bridge is on the south side of the river.

On the north (town) side is the broad tow-path seen here, lined with cafés and upmarket restaurants, and more than a few decent pubs. Richmond has a certain village character; walk up the narrow high street, into Water Lane and down to the river; watch the sunset - and watch your waistline.

Two icons of London - one clad in Cornish granite, the other a modern marvel with a dozen nicknames (the Egg, Darth Vader‘s Helmet, and others unprintable).

Different they are, but the Gothic Tower Bridge and the curved glassy exterior of the London Assembly building [City Hall] create a pleasant contrast rather than a clash.

Once an line of wharves and docks, the area beside the River Thames is acquiring a reputation for sensitive regeneration.

One of south London‘s secrets - Cleaver Square is a well-preserved example of Georgian urban planning. Just far enough from the main road, it has an atmosphere apart.

Sit and watch the world go by, or have a pint in the Prince of Wales pub. A magnet for London‘s boule players ...

South London didn‘t escape the snows this winter - but the runners were still out in the square.

In recent years, Britain has seen some of the coldest and longest freezes for a century; we slither a bit, and the Scandinavians have a laugh at our expense. But we‘re British, and wouldn‘t have it any other way.

Limited edition : 250 ^ picture #square #1018 #Cleaver Sq Kennington - spring #80+ #405 mm / 16 in square #360-degree circular panorama

Georgian Squares in London were often set out without planting, with the architeture itself determining the look. Cleaver Square is unusual in this respect, having extensive planting : London planes, cherries and lime trees surround the square, and spring brings out the colours.

Pick a warm day, sit and relax. Watch the pétanque and have a glass of beaujolais or Bière de Garde at the pub in the corner of the square.

Kennington appeared in the Domesday Book of 1086 as ‘Chenintune‘, when the area was held by the goldsmith Teodric and produced annual revenues of £3 0s 0d for the Crown.

Today Cleaver Square is a favourite pedestrian short-cut to the local Tube station and shops at Kennington Cross. Passers-by may see a game of pétanque [or boules] under way beneath the shade trees - the gravel provides the ideal surface.

Running parallel to Baker Street , Chiltern Street has grand examples of 19th century mansion blocks, a selection of boutiques and the Blandford Hotel - popular with tourists, shoppers and business travellers.

Portman Mansions, the red-brick building shown here, was designed by Henry Saxon Snell, an architect better known for workhouses and hospitals. Here he has incorporated little luxuries, fine brickwork and gargoyles including a monkey and Quasimodo.

Unnoticed by visitors to the nearby Madame Tussaud‘s, the street‘s details are worth a 5-minute diversion and more than one upward glance.

London loves its Royal Parks - 5,000 acres or nearly 8 square miles of greenery. One of the largest is Regent‘s Park - properly The Regent‘s Park. Once Henry VIII‘s hunting ground, the park is big enough for grand formal gardens, sports fields, a theatre and the famous ZfL London Zoo - with its own wharf on the nearby Regent's Canal.

Within the Inner Circle of Regent‘s Park are Queen Mary‘s Gardens with more than 400 varieties or roses, some of which are shown here. Take a picnic, rent a rowing boat, smell the roses. The squirrels will make you feel wanted.

Just round the corner from Westminster Abbey and Parliament Square, this quiet little street is another jewel in England's crown.

Named after Cowley in the old county of Middlesex, Cowley Street is popular with politicians - notably the Liberal Democrats who have their headquarters here.

Part of an exceptionally well-preserved Georgian enclave, the street was set out in the 1720‘s and has seen few outward changes in nearly 300 years.

Sognefjord - Aurland - Flåm

At the extreme inland limit of the Sogne fjord, Flåm is a tiny village of 400 ... with a deep-water berth big enough for ocean liners. No matter what route a visitor takes, the approach is always dramatic - a 26km road tunnel from the next village, the famous Flåmsbana railway with its waterfalls and incredible gradients, or by water - on the Queen Mary or a tiny ferry.

The surrounding cliffs rise from sea level to 2,000m, surely one of the natural wonders of the world.

The view from Richmond Hill down to the River Thames and Petersham Meadows is perhaps one of the classic ‘rural‘ views of South East England, yet we are only 7 miles / 11 km from central London.

Protected by Act of Parliament since 1908, the view is guaranteed in perpetuity. Here we see it on a frosty morning in autumn - worth getting up early for the colours and perfect tranquility. Sir Joshua Reynolds painted here in the 18th century - and the view has changed little in the intervening 250 years.

London‘s newest pedestrian river-crossing, seen at twilight in autumn.

Nicknamed the ‘wobbly bridge‘ shortly after its opening in 2000, the structure initially suffered from alarming oscillations - likened to ‘being on a ship‘.

The addition of hidden cables, dampers and clever counterbalancing has steadied the structure - proof famously provided by the ladies of the Women‘s Institute, who were asked to stride across the bridge in lockstep. The fix passed the test and the bridge is now open to all comers.
